Premiile MTV Video Music Awards au avut loc duminică seara în cadrul Barclays Center din Brooklyn, având-o drept gazdă pe Doja Cat. Cele mai mari vedete ale muzicii au concurat pentru celebrele statui Moonperson, iar marele câștigător al nopții a fost Lil Nas X, care a primit inclusiv râvnitul trofeu Video of the Year (Videoclipul Anului) pentru single-ul său „Montero (Call Me by Your Name)”.
Printre câștigătorii serii s-au numărat și Olivia Rodrigo, care a fost desemnată Best New Artist (Cel mai bun artist emergent) și a cărei piesă, drivers license, este Song of the Year (Piesa anului). Justin Bieber, care a câștigat Artist of the Year (Artistul anului), cât și Best Pop (Cea mai bună piesă pop), pentru piesa sa „Peaches”, Billie Eilish, care a câștigat Video for Good pentru balada ei „Your Power”; BTS, care a câștigat Group of the Year (Grupul Anului) și Best K-Pop (Cea mai bună piesă pop); și Travis Scott, care a câștigat premiul Hip-Hop pentru Franchise (cu Young Thug și M.I.A.).
Unul dintre cele mai emoționante momentele ale serii a fost omagiul pe care cei de la Foo Fighters l-au adus lui Charlie Watts (Rolling Stones), înainte ca aceștia să accepte Global Icon Award.
Bieber a performat pe scena VMA după o pauză de 6 ani, interpretând alături de Kid Laroi single-ului Stay, dar și Ghost, noul hit de pe albumul său solo, Justice. Chloe Bailey, din trupa R&B Chloe x Halle, a debutat solo cu noul ei single, Have Mercy. De asemenea, Lil Nas X și-a făcut marea reîntoarcere alături de rapperul Jack Harlow. Cei doi au interpretat noul lor hit Industry Baby. Îndrăgitul Ed Sheeran a interpretat noul său single, Shivers, pe scena Toyota.
